What Does an Orthopedic Surgeon Do?
Orthopedic surgeons specialise in diagnosing and treating conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system — bones, joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Despite the name, the majority of orthopedic work is non-surgical. Most patients are managed with medicines, physiotherapy, injections, or regenerative treatments.
Signs You Should See an Orthopedic Surgeon
Joint Pain
- Pain in the knee, hip, shoulder, or ankle that persists beyond 2-3 weeks
- Joint pain that worsens with activity and improves with rest
- Morning stiffness lasting more than 30 minutes
- Swelling around a joint that does not resolve
After an Injury
- Any injury where you cannot bear weight
- A joint that looks deformed or is extremely swollen after a fall
- A pop sound in the knee followed by swelling — could be ACL
- Shoulder that came out or feels loose
Do Not Wait Too Long
Many patients say they will see the doctor when it gets really bad. By then, the cartilage has worn further, muscles have weakened, and treatment options have reduced. Early consultation means more choices — including non-surgical ones.
What to Expect at Your First Consultation
Your orthopedic surgeon will take a detailed history, examine the affected joint, and review any X-rays or MRI scans you bring. Based on this, a treatment plan is discussed — always starting with the most conservative appropriate option.
Preparing for Your Consultation
- Bring all previous X-rays, MRI scans, and reports
- List all medications you are currently taking
- Note when the pain started and what makes it worse
- Bring a family member if you are elderly
