Regenerative Medicine in Orthopaedics: The Future of Joint Care

By Dr. Sumit Dubewar · Orthopedic Surgeon, Secunderabad · 6 min read

What is Regenerative Medicine?

Regenerative medicine aims to restore the structure and function of damaged tissues by harnessing and amplifying the body's own repair mechanisms. In orthopaedics, this means using biological agents derived from the patient's own body to heal cartilage, tendons, ligaments, and bone — without synthetic drugs or surgery.

The Core Regenerative Treatments in Orthopaedics

PRP — Platelet-Rich Plasma

Blood is drawn, centrifuged to concentrate platelets, and injected into the damaged tissue. PRP has Level 1-2 evidence for knee osteoarthritis, tennis elbow, and plantar fasciitis. It is the most widely available and cost-effective regenerative option.

BMAC — Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate

Bone marrow contains mesenchymal stem cells that can differentiate into cartilage, bone, and connective tissue. BMAC concentrates these cells and delivers them to the damaged joint. More powerful than PRP for cartilage regeneration.

Hyaluronic Acid Injections

Viscosupplementation — replacing the depleted synovial fluid in arthritic joints with hyaluronic acid to improve lubrication and reduce pain. An established treatment with good evidence in knee osteoarthritis.

Dr. Sumit's Approach — OrthoRegen

As a DABRM (USA) certified regenerative medicine specialist, Dr. Sumit evaluates each patient individually to determine the most appropriate regenerative protocol — based on the condition, grade of damage, age, and activity level.
