Osteoarthritis
The most common joint disease — affects over 45% of Indians above the age of 65. The knee is the most commonly affected joint, followed by the hip and spine. Cartilage gradually wears away, causing pain, stiffness, and swelling. Treatment ranges from physiotherapy and injections to joint replacement surgery in severe cases.
Rheumatoid Arthritis
An autoimmune condition where the body attacks its own joints. More common in women. Affects small joints of the hands and feet first, causing swelling, warmth, and morning stiffness. Requires early medical treatment to prevent joint destruction.
Fractures & Trauma
India has one of the highest road traffic accident rates globally, making fractures an enormous burden. Osteoporosis-related fractures in elderly women are a leading cause of disability and mortality.
Sports Injuries
ACL tears, meniscus injuries, rotator cuff tears, and ankle sprains are increasingly common with the growing popularity of cricket, football, and gym activities.
Back Pain
The second most common reason for doctor visits in India after the common cold. Disc prolapse, spondylosis, and muscle strain are the most common causes.
Important
Most orthopedic conditions are NOT immediately surgical. The vast majority can be managed with physiotherapy, medication, injections, or regenerative treatments. Surgery is always the last resort.
Prevention Matters
- Maintain healthy weight — every kg of excess weight = 4 kg extra force on your knee
- Exercise regularly — build muscle strength to protect joints
- Calcium and Vitamin D supplementation after 40
- Wear proper footwear that supports your entire musculoskeletal chain
