What Are Spinal Discs?
Spinal discs are the shock-absorbing cushions between the vertebrae of your spine. Each disc has a tough outer ring and a soft, gel-like centre. They allow your spine to flex, extend, and rotate while protecting the vertebrae from impact.
Important Fact
Studies show that 37% of people in their 30s have disc degeneration visible on MRI — yet have NO symptoms at all. Disc degeneration seen on a scan does not automatically mean it is causing your pain.
Symptoms of Symptomatic Disc Degeneration
- Chronic low back pain that is worse with prolonged sitting or standing
- Pain that improves when walking or changing positions
- Radiating pain down the leg (sciatica) when a disc presses on a nerve
- Numbness or tingling in the leg or foot
- In severe cases — weakness in the leg muscles
Treatment Options
Conservative Treatment (First Line)
- Physiotherapy — core strengthening exercises reduce load on the disc
- Anti-inflammatory medications
- Epidural steroid injections — for nerve pain
- Heat therapy and postural correction
- Weight management
When Surgery is Needed
Surgery is considered only when conservative treatment fails after 6-8 weeks, or when there is significant nerve compression causing weakness, bladder/bowel issues, or severe unrelenting pain.
