Common Ankle Problems
Ankle Sprain
The most common sports injury in the world. The ankle rolls inward, stretching or tearing the lateral ligaments. Symptoms include immediate pain, swelling, and bruising. Most sprains heal with RICE protocol and physiotherapy. Severe tears may need surgical repair.
Chronic Ankle Instability
When ankle sprains are not properly treated, ligaments heal loosely, causing a feeling of the ankle giving way repeatedly. Requires structured physiotherapy to retrain the peroneal muscles. Persistent instability may need ligament reconstruction.
Achilles Tendinopathy
Chronic degeneration of the Achilles tendon, causing pain and stiffness at the back of the ankle — particularly severe with the first steps in the morning. Managed with eccentric exercises and PRP injection for resistant cases.
Ankle Arthritis
Less common than knee or hip arthritis but can be severely disabling. Often occurs after previous ankle fractures or chronic instability.
Ankle Sprain — Do Not Ignore It
A properly treated first ankle sprain rarely leads to instability. A poorly treated or repeated ankle sprain leads to chronic instability and accelerated arthritis. Get it assessed and treated properly the first time.
Prevention Tips
- Balance training — standing on one leg strengthens proprioception
- Proper footwear for your activity
- Ankle strengthening — peroneal muscle exercises prevent sprains
- Warm up before sport — cold muscles and tendons are more prone to injury
