Harmless Knee Noises

Warning Signs — Get Evaluated

See a Doctor if Your Knee Clicking is Associated With:

Pain with the click · Swelling · Locking — knee that will not fully straighten · Giving way · New onset after an injury · Progressive worsening · Associated warmth and redness

Common Causes of Significant Knee Clicking

Meniscus Tear

The meniscus can develop a flap tear that catches during movement — causing clicking, pain, and occasionally locking. Diagnosed on MRI and treated with arthroscopy.

Loose Bodies

Fragments of cartilage or bone floating inside the joint — can cause catching, clicking, and occasional locking. Removed arthroscopically.

Plica Syndrome

A fold of the joint lining that thickens and snaps over the femoral condyle with movement. Causes clicking and anterior knee pain in young active patients.

When to Stop Worrying

If your knee clicks without pain, without swelling, without giving way, and has been doing so for years without change — it is almost certainly benign. A single clinical evaluation to confirm this gives significant peace of mind.
